Discovering The Find: Different Types of Mattresses and How to Choose Between Them

Did you know that roughly 30% of people have insomnia issues? If getting a good night's sleep is a struggle for you, it could be time to upgrade your mattress. But before you spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a new mattress, it pays to research the best option for your needs.

Read on to learn about the different types of mattresses -- and how to choose the right one!

Latex

Latex mattresses are a great choice if you need soft cushioning and elasticity. These mattresses are breathable and durable, so you won't feel hot sleeping on one. And if you have allergy issues, the antimicrobial properties of natural latex can be a bonus that keeps your airways clear.

Latex mattresses can be made of one of three types of latex. Natural latex is generally the preferred type, as it offers the best comfort and it's a greener choice. Natural latex mattresses can be bouncy or firm, depending on how they've been constructed.

Synthetic and blended latex mattresses are the two other types of latex available. They are meant to simulate the qualities of natural latex, but these types won't be as durable. Also, be aware that latex mattresses are among the most expensive mattresses on the market.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses have long been the go-to choice among mattress options. They contain steel coils that are the source of support, and they're covered in a cushiony fabric.

The fabric cover surrounding the mattress frame can be plush or smooth depending on your preference. Innerspring mattresses have a familiar feeling for most people since they're commonly found in bedrooms or hotel rooms. They provide smooth and level support that can be ideal for back sleepers.

Choose an innerspring mattress if you need extra support or have back problems. If you're on a budget, know that innerspring mattresses come in a range of prices, too. You'll pay less for an innerspring mattress than you will for a foam option.

Memory Foam

For a cushier mattress experience, a memory foam mattress might be the right choice. The mattress materials used to construct memory form include polyurethane, which can help give these mattresses a denser quality. Memory foam mattresses also tend to be more durable than innerspring mattresses.

Memory foam is ideal if you like a mattress to conform to your body so you feel like you're sinking into it. While innerspring mattresses provide bounce, memory foam sinks. This helps offer relief to aching bodies and provides spine support.

One potential negative with memory foam mattresses is that they can get hot. If you're frequently hot at night already, these mattresses might not be comfortable. Be aware that memory foam mattresses are among the more expensive mattresses on the market, as well.

Hybrid

Get the best of both worlds with a hybrid mattress. These mattresses combine springs and foam layers for a good compromise that is neither too soft nor too firm. The foam may be latex, memory, or gel.

Hybrid mattresses have a bouncier feel than memory foam mattresses. They also don't get as hot, so you won't have to worry about sweating through the night. Plus, they can be customized with different types of foam to suit your comfort preferences.

Expect to pay more for a hybrid mattress, though. If you're struggling to hit the recommended seven hours of sleep each night, however, the investment may be worthwhile.

Poly-Foam

Poly-foam mattresses are another great choice if you prefer a firm mattress. Polyurethane, which is the base of the mattress materials, can be quite dense. This makes poly-foam mattresses a strong match for anyone needing pressure relief and a firm mattress.

After someone has been on the mattress, poly-foam can return to its original shape quickly. That means it can stand up to repeated use well, making it a durable investment.

When you're trying to avoid spending too much, poly-foam is one of the cheaper foam mattress options, too. Just be aware that, like other foam mattresses, poly-foam can trap heat and feel warm. On the plus side, poly-foam is durable and should last a decade.

Airbed

Don't overlook airbeds when you're checking mattress options. While you may not want to use an air mattress all the time, they are an excellent solution for temporary sleep needs. Have one on hand for guests or trips to ensure you're always comfortable.

Airbeds loft you higher in the air than other types of mattresses because they are filled with air. You'll need to use a pump to fill them, which can take time. And yes, there's always the potential that something can puncture the mattress and cause it to leak air.

On the plus side, though, an air mattress is portable and comfortable. Air mattresses provide great support. And the inflation level can be adjusted to skew softer or firmer.

Waterbed

Waterbed mattresses remain one of the most comfortable sleeping options available today. They offer a unique feeling, too, as the water within the mattress chambers provides minimal resistance. You will feel a sense of movement that can create the sensation that you're floating.

Waterbed mattresses offer a lot of flexibility for any sleeper, too. If you need a firmer mattress, you can adjust the mattress accordingly. Simply add more water to it!

You also can regulate temperatures to ensure you're always comfortable. When it's cold outside, you can crank up the controls a bit. And when the outside temperatures are higher, you can cool down the mattress so you don't overheat.

Research Different Types of Mattresses

With so many different types of mattresses on the market, it can be hard to pinpoint the right one. Check out latex or innerspring coil mattresses for firmer support. But don't overlook memory foam or hybrid mattresses for options that are softer yet supportive.
